In the mid 1800s this area was owned by the Lambton family, and most likely became known as “Canada” in honour of the 1st Earl of Durham, John George Lambton who served a Governor General in Canada from 1838-39. Some of the houses were demolished in the 1930s with the rest cleared in 1963.

Viaduct – Car Park in foreground is where some of the houses known as “Canada” were located.
The 11 arch viaduct was built in 1867 as part of the North East Railways line between Durham and Newcastle and is now part of the East Coast Main Line network. It stands 27mtr (90ft) above the road.
Opposite the current day bus stands is where the Brewery was located. It ceased brewing in 1921 and the site developed as the Queens Cinema which opened in 1931 but burnt down in 1994.
